Meaningful Service with Lasting Impact

The Office of Extension and Service-Learning (OESL), under the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning, and Innovation, leads and coordinates the University’s community extension and service-learning initiatives.

OESL connects academic knowledge and professional expertise with identified community needs. Through social action, curriculum-based service-learning, research-informed programs, and sustainable external partnerships, the Office strengthens civic responsibility while creating opportunities for students, employees, and partner communities to learn, serve, and grow together.

Vision

To be a leader in extending University services to its target communities through concrete demonstration of meaningful community involvement and service-learning in building wholesome and progressive society.

Mission

OESL commits to serve the community in uplifting the lives of the poor through reflective diverse programs and sustainable environmental protection.

Goal

OESL aims at achieving its vision and mission to serve partner communities and institutions congruent to the University's core values of integrity and service.

Objectives

OESL is committed to:

  1. Strengthen University-community relationships through real life reflective experience and reciprocity of service-learning;
  2. Enhance the social responsibility of its administrators, faculty, staff and students by mobilizing them for meaningful and responsive community service;
  3. Facilitate the delivery of relevant community extension programs, service-learning and civic engagement activities to adopted communities;
  4. Foster extension programs that align to the nature of the academic programs as well as to the core values of the University; and,
  5. Generate needed resources for the implementation of the university community extension programs and projects.

How OESL advances community engagement

Core Functions

Social Action Services

Mobilizes community service, volunteerism, advocacy, professional assistance, and immediate support for communities affected by natural or human-made calamities. Its major advocacies include community health, environment, education, socio-economic development, legal services, and gender and development.

Service-Learning Services

Connects academic learning with responsive community service through student mentoring, training and orientation, reciprocal partnerships, structured reflection, and the integration of service-learning into courses and curricula.

External Linkages Services

Builds and sustains partnerships with research institutions, industries, government agencies, non-government organizations, and community stakeholders to expand collaboration, resources, and opportunities for research and extension.
