September 18 marks the celebration of World Bamboo Day, which was first celebrated in 2009 to raise global awareness of bamboo and promote the bamboo industry. Marking this international occasion this year with the theme “Alay ng Bayan sa Inang Kalikasan, Kawayan!”, the DNER-Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office 10 initiated bamboo planting on September 17.
In support of this nationwide simultaneous event and in keeping up with the University’s advocacy of environmental conservation and preservation, Liceans participated in the planting of 200 bamboo stocks in a one-hectare area in Sitio Mapawa, Malasag, Cugman in this city. The team, led by Dr. Judy Marie Zoleta (chair of the Department of Natural Sciences), was composed of students and personnel from the three colleges – Arts and Sciences, Rehabilitation Science, and Business Administration.
In retrospect, the World Bamboo Organization (WBO) created this special day during its 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009. The organization advocates the sustainable use of bamboo for the economic development of local communities.
The health protocols issued by the IATF on the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases were observed during the conduct of the activity.
