LICEO U’S MUSIC TEACHER WINS IN SPAIN, AUSTRIA MUSIC COMPETITIONS

Liceo de Cagayan University congratulates Prof. Cipriano Mercado de Guzman Jr., a professor of the University’s Conservatory of Music and a distinguished Filipino opera singer, for winning the top prizes in two prestigious international music competitions held in Spain and Austria within a single week.

On July 27, 2024, at the International Music Competition Barcelona “Grand Prize Virtuoso” hosted at UNESCO’s Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, De Guzman, alongside Israeli soprano Shiri Magar, secured the first prize in the professional/senior category. His winning streak continued as he claimed the top prize again on July 31 at the Solitär Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria.

Known as the “Filipino Baritone”, De Guzman won awards in various international vocal competitions across cities such as New York, London, Rome, Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, and Lugano. Notably, he was the first Filipino to achieve dual victories at the American Protégé International Music Competition at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall in 2016 and 2017.
