HUMSS STUDENTS EMERGE AS TOP WINNERS IN 20TH NATIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY WEEK

Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students Shalaine Lleansy Meykatriz Q. Berludo and Jean Chloe Apilat brought pride to Liceo de Cagayan University by winning championship titles in the Essay Writing and Extemporaneous Speech contests at the 20th National Biotechnology Week, held from November 25 to 29, 2024, at the Copeland Gymnasium, University of the Philippines – Los Baños.

Berludo triumphed in the Essay Writing competition, while Apilat claimed first place in the Extemporaneous Speech contest. Their success was made possible with the guidance of their dedicated coaches, Mr. Nap S. Caruz and Mr. Marco A. Cuajao, esteemed faculty members of the Senior High School department.

Adding to these remarkable achievements, STEM student Jihad M. Paudac competed in the inter-high school biotechnology quiz bee, “𝙏𝙖𝙩𝙖𝙇𝘼𝘽𝙎 𝙆𝙖 𝘽𝙖?” and had an impressive run in the finals. Paudac’s performance was supported by the expertise and guidance of his coach, Ms. Ana Lagrimas Jison.

With the theme, “#experienceBIOTECH: Expand the Future of Biotechnology through Education, Innovation, and Commercialization,” the event highlighted the transformative role of biotechnology in shaping the future. It featured various individual and team competitions alongside exhibitor booths, forums, lectures, and a guided tour of UPLB's research and development facilities. A hybrid lecture sponsored by the Biology Teachers Association – BIOTA Philippines was also part of the program.

Senior High School administrators Mrs. Mary Grace C. Mesias (Principal), Mrs. Marianne Joy D. Pegalan (Assistant Principal), and Academic Chairpersons Mrs. Emely Velez and Ms. Naihma Mae Casicas participated in the event. They conducted benchmarking tours of UPLB's programs and facilities to explore initiatives aimed at enhancing educational strategies at Liceo de Cagayan University.

Congratulations to the Licean champions for their outstanding achievements, showcasing excellence and resilience in the field of biotechnology.
